Understanding Your Patterns, Transforming Your Life
Schema Therapy is an integrative, evidence-based approach that combines elements of cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment theory, and experiential techniques. It helps you identify and understand deeply rooted patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, known as “schemas,” that often develop in childhood and continue to shape your relationships and self-image into adulthood.
Rather than focusing only on surface-level symptoms, Schema Therapy looks at the origins of these patterns and the unmet emotional needs behind them. By working through these underlying schemas and the coping styles that have developed around them, you can build healthier ways of relating to yourself and others and create lasting, meaningful change.
Benefits of Schema Therapy
Many of us carry long-standing patterns, sometimes called “schemas,” that developed in childhood as a way of coping with unmet emotional needs. These patterns can show up as harsh self-criticism, fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting others, or a persistent sense of not being good enough.
If you find yourself repeating the same painful relationship patterns, struggling with self-worth, or feeling stuck despite your best efforts to change, Schema Therapy can help.
Benefits of Schema Therapy include:
Greater self-understanding: Identifying the origins of your patterns so you can make sense of long-standing struggles.
Healthier coping styles: Recognising unhelpful coping modes, such as avoidance or overcompensation, and replacing them with healthier responses.
Improved self-worth: Challenging deep-seated beliefs of inadequacy or unworthiness and building a stronger, more compassionate sense of self.
Stronger relationships: Breaking free from repeating relationship patterns and developing more secure, satisfying connections with others.
Through dedicated support and consistent effort, Schema Therapy can help you:
Reduce the Impact of Symptoms: Experience a significant decrease in the frequency and severity of your distress.
Build Emotional Resilience: Strengthen your ability to meet your own needs and respond to setbacks with self-compassion rather than self-criticism.
Cultivate Well-Being: Build emotional resilience, experience increased happiness, and achieve a more fulfilling life.
Taking the first step towards Schema Therapy is a courageous and empowering decision that can unlock your full potential and help you manage your challenges effectively.
How Schema Therapy Works
Schema Therapy typically begins with an assessment to help identify your core schemas, the coping styles you have developed around them, and the different “modes” you shift into when these schemas are triggered.
Your therapist will help you understand where these patterns come from, often tracing them back to unmet needs in childhood, and how they continue to show up in your current relationships and behaviour.
Using a blend of cognitive, experiential, and behavioural techniques, you will work together to challenge unhelpful beliefs, process difficult emotions connected to earlier experiences, and practise new, healthier ways of responding.
Your therapist will discuss the most suitable approach for you and work collaboratively with you to shape the course of your treatment.
What to Expect
Schema Therapy is a collaborative process between you and a qualified therapist. It involves:
Building Trust and Rapport: Creating a safe and supportive environment where you can openly discuss your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
Identifying Your Schemas: Exploring the origins of your patterns and how they developed in response to early life experiences.
Understanding Coping Modes: Recognising the ways you have learned to cope with these patterns, and how they may be holding you back.
Building New Skills: Practising healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and responding both in and out of session.
Monitoring Progress: Regularly reflecting on your progress and adjusting the approach as needed.
