Affirming Support for Gender Expression and Sexuality

Gender and sexuality affirming care is grounded in the understanding that gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation exist across a broad and natural spectrum. Whether you’re exploring your identity, navigating a social or physical transition, or simply want a space where the full range of who you are is welcomed, our approach starts from respect, curiosity, and acceptance — never from an assumption that there’s one “right” way to be.

The Importance of affirming Care

Affirming practice is recognised as best-practice support for LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families. At Invision, this means therapy and assessments that centre your lived experience, use the language and pronouns that feel right for you, and focus on your wellbeing and self-determination rather than judgement or pressure to conform.

How affirming Care Works

We begin by getting to know you as a whole person — your history, relationships, and goals. For some, this includes support to explore gender identity or sexual orientation without pressure to reach any particular conclusion. For others, it may involve working through a comprehensive assessment of your readiness for gender affirming medical treatment, such as hormone replacement therapy or surgery, in line with recognised clinical guidelines. We can also support you through social transitioning — such as names, pronouns, and expression — as well as preparation for physical transition, working alongside family, partners, and other providers where helpful.

What to Expect

You’ll be paired with a therapist who listens first and takes the time to understand your individual story, rather than applying assumptions about what your identity or transition should look like. Together you’ll set goals that matter to you — whether that’s navigating family or social relationships, building confidence in your identity, working through anxiety or past experiences of discrimination, or completing an assessment to access gender affirming treatment. Your plan is reviewed regularly so it continues to reflect where you are.

How to Access the Service

Please get in touch with our friendly administrative team via our contact page, phone, or email address and we will send you an intake form and our information sheet and consent form to start the intake process.

You do not need a referral to book an initial appointment, however you may want to discuss your needs with your general practitioner (GP) to determine if you qualify for Medicare funding, which can cover up to ten sessions with a Mental Health Care Plan. In such cases, you would need a referral. Additionally, private health insurance rebates may be available through your provider.
