A Compassionate Path to Deeper Connection
Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO) is a couples therapy approach, grounded in Internal Family Systems (IFS), that helps you understand what’s really happening underneath your recurring conflicts and disconnection. Instead of getting stuck reacting to each other’s protective parts, you’ll learn to reconnect as who you truly are, with each other and with yourselves.
The Importance of IFIO
Many couples try to solve conflict by changing each other’s behaviour, only to find the same patterns resurface. IFIO looks deeper, helping each partner understand the vulnerable feelings driving their reactions. At Invision Psychology, this means therapy that addresses the root of disconnection, not just its surface symptoms.
How IFIO Works
We start by helping you recognise your own protective parts — the ones that criticise, shut down, chase reassurance, or go quiet to avoid conflict — and the tender feelings beneath them, like fear of abandonment or not being enough. You’ll learn to notice how these parts activate your nervous system in the heat of the moment, creating more space to respond from calm rather than fight-or-flight. Rather than getting caught in blame, you’ll learn to notice when a part has taken over and step back into your calm, curious “Self.” From there, we introduce practices like courageous communication: speaking for your parts (“a part of me feels hurt”) rather than from them (“you always do this”), so you can express your needs and vulnerability openly instead of through criticism or withdrawal. Your partner, in turn, learns to listen with compassion and curiosity instead of defensiveness. Over time, this builds a different kind of conversation — one where both people feel safe enough to be honest, heard, and able to repair, reconnect and problem solve, despite their differences.
What to Expect
Sessions typically involve both partners together, with a therapist trained in IFIO guiding the process. Rather than mediating arguments, we help you slow down and get curious about what’s happening beneath them. Early sessions focus on understanding each partner’s patterns and protective parts; later sessions build practical skills for communicating from a place of openness rather than defensiveness. Progress isn’t about never disagreeing again, it’s about disagreeing differently, with more compassion, honesty, and repair.
